Wanting a Meal
Yesterday, I visited the Newseum in Washington, DC, where I saw their Pulitzer Prize photo exhibit. This is an incredible exhibit, with many photographs that will sear themselves into you memory forever.
This picture jumped out and touched me the most (perhaps because of my travel in Africa). The starving little girl is in Sudan (in March 1993, during the famine). She is attempting to crawl to the UN food station one kilometer away, but is having trouble because she is suffering so much from starvation.
The photographer who took this picture, Kevin Carter, evidently waited 20 minutes to see if the vulture would fly away before taking this picture. He then chased the vulture away—but left the girl on her own. Her fate is unknown. He won the Pulitzer a year later (April 1994), killing himself in July due to guilt of not helping her).
A unforgettable picture — with a horrific story none of us should ever forget.
One of my favourite photos ever. I took this on a Tanzanian safari (with Micato) in 1997
